Seasonal Food

Why should we make the conscious choice to only choose seasonal foods? According to scientists, researchers, and natural health experts, it is important to eat with the cycles of nature and only consume food that was grown at the time you are eating it.
As the weather changes across the globe so does the fresh produce that is available. Each season brings a different selection of food. This is a good time to experiment with new recipes or add seasonal ingredients to old favourites.  
Because of modern agriculture and food processing techniques, most foods are available year-round. We forget that food availability changes with the seasons. So even though technology makes it possible for us to eat tomatoes in the dead of winter, that doesn’t mean we should do it. 

When fruits and vegetables are picked for consumption that has been naturally ripened on the vine or the tree and harvested at the right time, it will have much more flavour and nutrition.

Seasonal food is also cheaper because farmers are harvesting a large abundance of produce. If it is sold locally there is also less need for transportation costs, again this reduces the cost. 
Produce that is purchased in season is more likely to be fresher, consumed closer to harvesting and higher in nutritional value, some anti-oxidants such as Vitamin C, folate and carotenes will rapidly decline when stored for periods of time. Locally in-season sourced fruits and vegetables will also appear brighter and more vibrant. 
Food grown outside of their season or natural environment need a lot more human assistance in forms of pesticides, waxes, chemicals and preservatives to grow and look appealing to us consumers. By choosing seasonal food you are much more likely to be able to choose items free from pesticides.

  • You have a broader variety of foods in your diet.
  • Saves your wallet! Seasonal foods are cheaper to produce and often cheaper to buy when they are in season as well.
