"What is happening to my life?" We have all been there, either sat with a friend or family member who is really struggling and finding it hard at the moment, or thinking it ourselves. So what can you do to help?
When life is good it’s often because we have created balance between all our different needs. When something unexpected goes wrong we are thrown off balance and this lack of balance makes it even more difficult to deal with the problem.
So when trying to deal with a difficult period in your life or trying to help a friend/family member who is struggling identify the areas which have become out of balance and try to address these.
For example if you are working full time and studying at night and suddenly a relative is taken into hospital and you need to visit regularly you could find yourself not having enough time to buy groceries and prepare healthy meals, running out of money because of the added petrol and parking expenses etc.
Ask for help; could your employer give you a few hours off whilst you visit your sick relative? Could a neighbor pick up basic groceries for you when they go to get there’s? Could you order groceries online to be delivered at a convenient time?
Re-organise your resources. Often a rough patch hits one area of your resources more than others so can you organise them again to get you through the difficult spot?
Divide demands into three groups:
Things that can wait.
Things you can’t fix no matter what you do.
Areas where acting right now can actually make a difference.
Prioritise and plan, you will not be able to do everything for everyone so look at the areas where you can make most impact and focus on these. Communicate with the people around you so they know how they can help and what you can and can’t do.
Tip: post the priority list somewhere very visible
Life is often good when we have balanced all our different needs. Stay balanced by being aware of what your needs are and making time for each of them. Consider what responsibilities you have and make sure that you include these in the balance.
When things feel like they are out of sync try pausing to evaluate what's become unbalanced? What can you do now to address the situation? Can you organise your resources to help you manage a difficult situation?
Create a short term plan which allows you to balance your needs and carry on. Make sure that you communicate your plan to others so that they can support you.
